Basia Zielinska

My early childhood was spent in a post war, displaced persons, Polish camp, housing 350 families, in England, and I was raised by war traumatised parents. I always had a strong, creative awareness, however, after completing school, art school was not an option so during my young adult years, I attended evening community classes in life drawing, glass engraving, decorative art and contemporary art whenever I could.

Decorative art led to a very successful career teaching for over a decade in private studios in Australia as well as overseas, winning several awards during that time.

Training as an Art Therapist connected me to a strong awareness of the sub conscious, using art mediums to document responses. Creating art replaced the spoken word in art therapy sessions and this sub conscious communication is what I tap into on when I paint.

Currently, an Artist in Residence at Primrose Park Studio, an initiative run by North Sydney Council, I now spend every spare moment painting there.

The history of RAS Arts & Crafts competitions is as long and intriguing as its diverse subjects, and is reflective of changing times and tastes. Classes that could be classified as art or craft have appeared in different sections over the years, leading up to them being part of Art & Craft or Arts sections.

My Art is a response
My Art is a responseto the world around me
When painting, I am intuitively responding to the world around me and to my internal, emotional journey. My paintings have many layers and symbols, which have deep personal meaning.
